PMS or premenstrual syndrome is cyclical disorder of the luteal phase (or the second half) of the menstrual cycle. The symptoms are numerous and exceedingly common. As a result, the medical community has considered throwing out the condition altogether and labeling it as normal. However, women everywhere can attest to the fact that the PMS symptoms they experience significantly affect their physical and emotional health. For some women, they anticipate being incapacitated for at least several days each month. We should not accept this as normal.
While conventional medicine typically addresses the condition with oral contraceptives, this approach doesn’t always work and can even exacerbate symptoms. In naturopathic medicine, we can look to underlying causes.
The most common causes of PMS are:
• Vitamin deficiencies- B6, magnesium, calcium, vitamins A and E
• Low blood sugar
• Stress
• Thyroid conditions
• Hormone imbalance- often low progesterone
• Inadequate rest and sleep
• Low vitamin D
Fortunately, each of these factors can be addressed in a naturopathic visit. If you would like to receive support for this issue, get in touch with me today.
